The Rockaways… Short rides/Steep waves… Not necessarily ideal, but closest break NYC. I ate my fair share of Rockaway sand, swallowed some mystery sea foam and had a crab
crush my big toe on the wade in. Bonus –> More tolerant crowd as you can blend in with the 45 surf schools. In all seriousness, not a bad place to learn, close to NYC, gets crowded, is steep and best at high tide when it fills in. It pumps in the fall/winter so throw on the 4/3 hood and boots and you should get some good swells.
One of my favorite parts of surfing the Rockaways is going for a beer/taco at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club after the session.. where I pontificate about the 40 waves I caught to unsuspecting listeners/cyclists… Well, not really as they quickly call out my bs. Nice beer selection and tacos are damn tasty. But they know how to kick me where it hurts… In the coconuts. Yes that’s right…a $6 coconut? At least give a shot a rum with it.
